5-Zone 2205 Service Boundary Map

For duplex steels, the label “corrosion-resistant stainless steel alloy” is not a service approval. Chlorides, temperature, pH, crevices, stress, oxidants and flow can shift corrosion or cracking risk.

An honest trade-off: a higher-alloy choice is not always the right call; joints, welds or chemistry can remain limiting. This counter-intuitive result rejects the common assumption that grade escalation closes system risk. The honest decision is to document the trade-off by naming the unresolved mechanism and required evidence in the RFQ.

2205 duplex stainless steel has an austenitic and ferritic stainless structure: verify ferrite and austenite after heat exposure rather than treating it as austenitic or ferritic. The ferritic and austenitic balance affects weldability and resistance to SCC; a pit remains possible outside the verified boundary.

Duplex 2205 offers a combination of high strength and localized-corrosion resistance; bind that strength and corrosion resistance to condition, standard and service. For offshore oil, chemical processing, marine, heat-exchanger, desalination and energy equipment, document the service boundary before approval.

  • High yield strength is a benefit; any higher yield strength used in design must match the cited plate/sheet condition.
  • Molybdenum- and nitrogen-bearing chemistry for localized-corrosion resistance.
  • Duplex structure that changes welding, forming and heat-treatment practice.
  • Resistance to pitting and crevice attack and resistance to stress corrosion cracking must be checked against the actual fluid and temperature.

PREN—the pitting resistance equivalent number—ranks balanced compositions; it does not prove good corrosion resistance in service. Selection still requires code, corrosion, fabrication and buyer review.

  • No universal chloride-temperature limit covers pitting and crevice corrosion.
  • ISO 15156-3 does not answer every general or localized-corrosion question.
  • Higher PREN does not prove stress corrosion resistance or freedom from chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Order UNS S32205 and S31803 as Explicit Designations

Modern 2205 procurement commonly points to UNS S32205 because its chemistry was narrowed to improve consistency, especially through welding and thermal processing. S31803 and S32205 should not be treated as automatically interchangeable on a drawing, inquiry or certificate.

IMOA’s technical guide explains that earlier S31803 limits allowed broader chemical composition before tighter controls gained acceptance. For S32205, compare alloying elements—especially nitrogen and manganese—against the ordered limits, not a datasheet typical. Nitrogen content remains a separate certificate field.

Certificate Review Requirements

A reviewer should be able to relate the order line to the heat, product form, standard, delivery condition and reported chemistry. Product markings, packing list and inspection document should preserve that identity through release.

Set the Boundary Between 316L, Lean Duplex, Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex

Compare types of stainless steel and steel grades by failure mode and design basis, not alloy rank. Moving up in alloy content can miss the bottleneck when joints, dissimilar welds, crevices, deposits, stress or process excursions control performance.

Choose austenitic steels when the approved service and code basis does not need the duplex profile. Austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 316 avoid duplex phase-control requirements but still need corrosion and code review.

No single certificate answers every acceptance question. A controlled order distinguishes management-system assurance, material inspection documents, product-standard tests and any project-specific screening for detrimental phases or corrosion behavior.

ISO 9001 addresses the management system. It does not certify one heat of Duplex 2205.

ASTM A923 has a defined job

ASTM A923-25 provides methods for detecting detrimental intermetallic-phase effects in duplex austenitic/ferritic stainless steels. It also warns that chemistry and mechanical-property compliance alone does not necessarily prove their absence.

  • Name the required method and acceptance criterion in the order.
  • Relate the requirement to product condition and fabrication exposure.
  • Don’t present A923 as a universal service-life guarantee.

EN 10204 type belongs in the purchase order

“Certificate available” is incomplete because inspection-document types differ in content and validation route. The buyer should state the required EN 10204 type and any third-party review at inquiry stage.

Preserve the Duplex Structure Through Welding and Thermal Processing

Weld behavior is less forgiving when uncontrolled heat creates phase-balance risk. The use of duplex stainless steels requires a qualified fabrication plan. Ease of fabrication can be lower compared to austenitic grades, so joint design, filler, interpass control and controlled heat input must be defined.

Published guidance identifies ER2209 as a commonly used matching filler for 2205 and stresses heat-input and interpass-temperature control. Project-specific welding procedures remain authoritative for the actual joint, thickness, process and service.

Heat-treatment controls to define

The 2014 IMOA fabrication guide cites a minimum solution-annealing temperature of 1040°C / 1900°F for 2205 followed by rapid cooling. Do not use this dated guide value as a universal shop procedure; verify the current product standard and qualified procedure.

TECHNICAL NOTE

Machining Note

Machinability can be lower than for familiar austenitic grades because higher strength changes cutting load and workholding. Disclose finished geometry, tolerance and surface condition so the quotation separates raw material from machining scope.

What is the difference between UNS S31803 and S32205?

UNS S32205 uses a narrower chemistry window than S31803, including a defined minimum nitrogen level, to improve consistency in 2205 production and fabrication. Put the exact designation on the RFQ, drawing and purchase order, and require buyer approval before any proposed substitution.

Which ASTM standard applies to Duplex 2205 plate?

ASTM A240/A240M-26 covers stainless plate, sheet and strip in the cited product route. A complete plate order must also state the UNS grade, dimensions, unit system, delivery condition, surface finish, edge condition, inspection-document type and any supplementary project acceptance requirements.

Does ISO 9001 certify the supplied Duplex 2205 heat?

No. ISO 9001 addresses a supplier's quality management system; it does not certify the chemistry, mechanical properties, heat identity or service suitability of one Duplex 2205 lot. Order-specific material identity must come from markings, inspection documents, test results and agreed traceability records.

Does ISO 15156-3 approve Duplex 2205 for every oil and gas application?

No. ISO 15156-3:2020 addresses cracking resistance for defined materials in hydrogen-sulfide-containing upstream oil-and-gas production and natural-gas treatment. It does not approve every downstream, general-corrosion or localized-corrosion application, so the buyer must confirm environment, material condition and the current project specification.

What information is needed for a reliable quotation?

A reliable quotation needs the UNS grade and service, product form, dimensions and tolerances, governing standard and condition, inspection and traceability package, quantity, processing, packing, destination, Incoterm and requested schedule. Mark unresolved engineering fields as open so exclusions and approval responsibilities remain visible.
