When Chloride, Seawater and Chemical Media Make Material Selection Risky

Alloy 625 is a regular candidate to replace stainless steel whenever the chloride level, seawater, chemical processing or flue gas desulfurization process introduces a risk gap in the supply. Failure to do so can mean not only corrosion but also customer risk related to temperature, weld repair, part geometry, inspection scope and the costs of placing an incorrect alloy into a pressure vessel, pipe spool or machined component.

A frank word: TiAlloy will never offer Alloy 625 as a “corrosion proof” material. For instance, NIST’s recent 2024 work on the Ni-based alloy 625 notes that localized corrosion behavior can vary depending on the process route and microstructural features, including Ti and Nb-rich nitrides in the wrought condition. This is precisely why we position Alloy 625 as a material for qualification at your specific chloride level, pH, temperature, pressure, crevice geometry, and fabrication history.

Special Metals’ technical bulletin illustrates the conventional use logic: molybdenum and niobium serve to strengthen the nickel-chromium matrix and, together with nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, provide resistance to oxidizing, non-oxidizing and chloride-bearing media. Treat outstanding corrosion resistance and resistance to oxidation as source-backed selection signals, not universal guarantees, especially where chloride ions, crevices or process route change the exposure.

Pain Nugget: Buyers can request UNS N06625 and still miss the correct product form, standard edition, Grade and heat-treatment condition. A 1-line alloy name is not enough for a pressure part, heat exchanger tube or valve stem.

Certification-folder evidence supplied for this project includes a Bureau Veritas certificate preview for Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. with BS EN ISO 9001:2015 and EN 9100:2018 language, and the user brief lists ISO 9001 quality, environmental and occupational health/safety systems. Special Metals’ July 2026 surcharge table lists raw-material averages for nickel, molybdenum, niobium and chromium. It is not a finished Inconel 625 price, so TiAlloy uses that market signal only as price-driver context.
