Why the first RFQ draft often fails
An ambiguous grade, a stale standard revision or a missing heat link creates procurement risk because the supplier, inspector and receiving team may be checking different requirements. Use the matrix below as a routing guide, not an engineering approval. Final grade selection still depends on the governing design, service media, temperature, fabrication route, inspection plan and purchaser-approved specification.

Common assumption to reject
A common purchasing mistake is “always order the highest grade.” A correct route matches grade selection to corrosion resistance, formability, applicable code requirements and traceability needs before pricing.
Corrosion screening boundary
“Titanium is corrosion resistant” is not a complete design basis. Technical corrosion guides warn that laboratory tables cannot replace evaluation under actual operating conditions because media, concentration, temperature, impurities, deposits, moisture, heat transfer, pH and crevices can all change the result.
The honest buying rule is to give TiAlloy the service envelope and confirm the proposed grade against the responsible engineer’s material-selection basis.
Finished sheet geometry still needs a quote-level definition of thickness, width, length, surface and tolerance.
Handling and surface-protection requirements belong on the RFQ, especially when cosmetic or downstream fabrication criteria apply.
A grade name without the standard, revision and service envelope leaves a selection gap.
Match Each Titanium Plate Standard to the End Use
Standards with similar product-form words can govern different alloys, conditions and purchasing contexts. Put the full designation and required revision on the RFQ, then confirm any supplementary tests, inspection clauses or project exceptions.
Common assumption to reject
Another common assumption is that ASTM B265 Grade 23 and ASTM F136 material are equivalent. They are not always equivalent purchasing paths. Always clarify by referencing the governing end-use standard on the request for quotation.
ASTM B265-25
Verified scope boundary
Annealed titanium and titanium-alloy strip, sheet and plate; the scope lists Grades 1, 2, 5, 7, 12 and 23 among other grades.

State the selected grade, condition, revision, dimensions and any purchaser additions.
Qualification
A material specification is not blanket approval for every component or service.
ASME SB-265
Verified scope boundary
ASME code material title for titanium and titanium-alloy strip, sheet and plate.
Use on the RFQ
State the governing code section, edition, grade and project requirements.
Qualification
Do not assume ASTM B265 stock is automatically acceptable for a code project without design and procurement review.
SAE AMS4911T
Verified scope boundary
Annealed 6Al-4V sheet, strip and plate through 4.000 in (101.60 mm), inclusive.
Use on the RFQ
Use only when the alloy, condition, form and thickness fall inside the invoked AMS route.
Qualification
It is not a generic specification for Grades 1, 2, 7, 12 or 23.
ASTM F136-26
Verified scope boundary
Wrought, annealed Ti-6Al-4V ELI for surgical-implant applications, including strip, sheet and plate.
Use on the RFQ
Use for the implant-material path together with all design, regulatory and purchaser requirements.
Qualification
A B265 Grade 23 description alone is not the same qualification.
Build a Heat-to-Crate Traceability Chain
A certificate has little value if it cannot be directly associated with the shipment received. Think of the document bundle as a chain of records instead of a single file retrieved after the entire purchase has been completed.

Record the grade, standard, revision, condition and supplementary clauses.
Heat or lot identity
Define the identifier that must stay linked to the material through processing.
Source document
Confirm what the MTR or MTC must report and which identity it references.
Processing traveler
Preserve the identity through cutting, heat treatment, finishing or subcontract work.
Inspection record
Link dimensional, visual or test reports to the same order and material identity.
Piece or bundle marking
Agree on the marking method, location, language and any prohibited marking practice.
Document review
Compare reported values and references with the purchase order before release.
Packing identity
Match bundle, crate and shipping labels to the packing list and material records.
Receiving check
Give the receiving team the fields needed to reconcile material, labels and documents.
Quality-system evidence is not product evidence
ISO 9001:2015 is a quality-management-system standard. Unlike a heat-linked test report, it does not identify the delivered titanium alloy, so TiAlloy treats the purchase specification and nine linked receiving checks as separate evidence.
