Inconel 718 Applications & Typical Components

Alloy 718 / UNS N07718 is primarily selected where high mechanical strength, fatigue resistance and age-hardenable properties are required together with useful corrosion and oxidation resistance. Typical applications are concentrated in aerospace, gas turbines, propulsion systems, high-strength hardware and other demanding rotating or structural components.

Inconel 718 aerospace gas turbine disk casing and rotating components

Aerospace & Gas Turbines

Inconel 718 was developed for demanding static and rotating turbine components where strength, fatigue behavior and creep resistance are important. The applicable material condition and specification depend on the component and acceptance requirements.

Turbine disks · rings · casings · housings · shafts · mounting components · high-strength fasteners

Space & Propulsion

Alloy 718 is also used in rocket and spacecraft hardware where a high-strength nickel alloy is required for structurally and thermally demanding components.

Rocket-engine components · rings · formed parts · structural hardware · propulsion-system components

Turbochargers, Fasteners & High-Strength Hardware

Age-hardened Alloy 718 is used where compact components need high strength and reliable mechanical performance. Automotive turbocharger parts, screws, springs and mounting hardware are established examples.

Turbocharger components · high-strength screws · bolts · springs · mounting hardware · instrumentation parts

Industrial & Cryogenic Components

Inconel 718 has also been used for cryogenic tankage and heat-resistant tooling. Suitability should still be evaluated against the actual temperature, loading, fabrication route and governing specification rather than by alloy designation alone.

Cryogenic hardware · tooling · formed sheet components · heat-resistant fixtures · structural parts

Oil & Gas Applications

Alloy 718 can also appear in demanding oil and gas equipment, including drilling and pump components, but the required 718 variant, heat treatment and qualification route must be confirmed against the governing specification and service environment. Specialized 718 CTP-type material routes are used for certain oil and gas applications; UNS N07718 alone should not be treated as evidence that a material satisfies a specific sour-service or downhole requirement.

Application does not replace specification. When requesting Inconel 718 for a turbine, propulsion, automotive, cryogenic or oil-and-gas component, define the product form, governing standard, material condition, dimensions and required inspection criteria with the RFQ.

When Inconel 718 Is the Right Choice

Alloy 718 / UNS N07718 is usually considered when mechanical strength is a primary material-selection requirement. Its precipitation-hardening response allows high tensile, yield, fatigue and creep capability to be developed through the specified heat-treatment route.

Choose Alloy 718 when the requirement is driven by

  • High tensile and yield strength in a precipitation-hardened nickel alloy
  • Fatigue resistance for highly loaded rotating or structural components
  • Creep and stress-rupture performance at elevated temperature
  • A specification-controlled aerospace, turbine, propulsion or high-strength industrial component
  • A material condition that can be developed through solution treatment and ageing
Inconel 718 high strength turbine aerospace and industrial component

Strength alone does not decide the alloy

Inconel 718 should not automatically replace another nickel alloy simply because higher strength is required. Corrosion environment, operating temperature, fabrication route, weldability, heat treatment, product form and governing specification can change the appropriate material choice.

718 vs 625

Strength vs corrosion / fabrication

When 718 may be more appropriate

Alloy 718 is precipitation hardenable and is commonly selected where high mechanical strength, fatigue performance and specification-controlled heat treatment are central to the component design.

When 625 may deserve more attention

Alloy 625 is commonly considered where corrosion resistance, weldability and fabrication without a required precipitation-hardening cycle are more important than obtaining the higher strength levels associated with aged Alloy 718.

718 vs X-750

Different strengthening routes

Both are age-hardenable nickel alloys, but they are not interchangeable

Alloy 718 and X-750 can both appear in high-temperature hardware, springs, fasteners and turbine-related applications. Their chemistry, heat-treatment schedules, mechanical-property requirements and applicable product specifications differ.

The correct choice should therefore follow the required service condition and governing material specification, rather than the general description “high-temperature nickel alloy.”

718 vs 725

High strength and service environment

Oil & gas requirements need separate review

Alloy 725 is another age-hardenable nickel alloy used for high-strength applications where corrosion resistance is also important. Certain oil-and-gas applications may therefore lead to a comparison between Alloy 718 variants and Alloy 725.

Material selection should consider the actual corrosive environment, heat-treatment condition, sour-service requirements and customer specification. The UNS designation alone does not establish application qualification.

Selection note

Do not select Inconel 718 from alloy name alone. Confirm the required product form, specification, heat-treatment condition, operating temperature, mechanical loading, corrosion environment and inspection criteria before treating Alloy 718 as an approved substitution for another nickel alloy.

Inconel 718 Price & Lead Time

Inconel 718 / Alloy 718 / UNS N07718 pricing is based on the actual purchase requirement. There is no single Inconel 718 price per kg that applies equally to plate, bar, tube, pipe and forgings.

Product form, dimensions, specification, material condition, quantity, testing, processing and destination are reviewed before a commercial quotation and lead time are confirmed.

Inconel 718 nickel alloy material for industrial supply and quotation

What affects Inconel 718 pricing?

Product form and size

Inconel 718 plate, sheet, round bar, tube, pipe and forgings follow different material and processing routes. Thickness, diameter, OD, wall thickness, length and cut size affect the quotation.

Specification and material condition

ASTM, SAE AMS or customer specifications may require different supply conditions, heat treatment, mechanical properties and acceptance criteria.

Testing and additional processing

PMI, mechanical testing, NDT, cutting, grinding, turning or machining should be included in the RFQ when required.

Quantity and delivery requirement

Order quantity, packing, documentation, destination and agreed Incoterms are reviewed with the material requirement.

Price references

Nickel market

Nickel market pricing can indicate changes in raw-material value but does not represent the finished price of an Alloy 718 product.

Alloy surcharge

Published alloy surcharges can indicate market movement. Final pricing still depends on form, size, condition, processing, testing and quantity.

Inconel 718 lead time is order-specific

A standard-size Alloy 718 bar does not necessarily follow the same delivery route as a special-size plate, seamless tube or finished forging. Lead time is reviewed against the product form, size availability, material condition, processing, inspection scope and quantity.

Inconel 718 Service & Engineering Notes

Alloy 718 / UNS N07718 does not have one set of mechanical or service properties that applies independently of material condition. Heat treatment, operating temperature, loading, environment, product form and governing specification all matter when the material is evaluated for an engineering application.

Inconel 718 high temperature turbine engineering component

Where service data needs context

Strength depends on material condition

Inconel 718 develops its characteristic high strength through a controlled solution-treatment and precipitation-hardening route. Solution-treated material and fully aged material should not be assumed to have the same mechanical properties. The required condition must therefore be linked to the governing specification and purchase order.

Temperature capability is not one universal limit

Published Alloy 718 data often describes demanding elevated-temperature service, but a single temperature should not be treated as a universal design limit. Load, exposure time, creep requirement, fatigue cycle, environment and heat-treatment condition all affect engineering suitability.

Corrosion resistance remains environment-specific

Alloy 718 provides useful oxidation and corrosion resistance, but the alloy designation alone does not establish suitability for every corrosive service. Media chemistry, temperature, chlorides, H₂S, pH, stress level and qualification requirements should be reviewed where relevant.

UNS N07718 does not define final acceptance

The UNS designation identifies the alloy chemistry family; it does not by itself establish compliance with every ASTM, SAE AMS, API, NACE or customer specification. Product form, dimensions, heat treatment, mechanical properties, testing and documentation must be checked against the actual specification being ordered.

Before material approval

Review the service requirement and purchase specification together before approving Inconel 718 for a component. For critical aerospace, turbine, pressure, cryogenic or oil-and-gas service, the buyer’s governing engineering specification takes priority over a general alloy description.

Inconel 718 FAQ

FAQ answers below are derived from supplier searches in machining forums, buyer search terms and standards review. Direct answers avoid the risk of a costly receiving, service or machining shortcut.

TiAlloy engineers use these answers to confirm against form, standard, service condition and document scope before turning a question into a quotation.

FAQ.01

Can TiAlloy supply Inconel 718 sheet, tube and bar in one order?

Yes, we can quote sheet, tubing, plate, rod, pipe and tube. However the standards for flat product, hollow product and bar/rod product will need to be segregated.

FAQ.02

Is Inconel 718 tubing the same as Inconel 718 pipe?

Not always. Buyer searches frequently mix terminology, but your request must identify OD, wall thickness, pressure basis and whether ASTM B983, AMS 5589, AMS 5590 or another standard is required.

FAQ.03

Why does TiAlloy ask for machining allowance on round bar?

Machinists may have work hardening and tool wear to contend with on Alloy 718 machining inquiries. Extra stock may be needed for cleanup, and that requirement should be set before cutting.

FAQ.04

Can TiAlloy quote finished Inconel 718 bolts?

Fastener stock or raw material can be discussed with TiAlloy. If you are looking for finished bolting in accordance with a specification such as ASTM A1014/A1014M or SAE AS4877, that request will follow a separate quote path.

FAQ.05

Is Alloy 718 safe for hydrogen or sour-service oil and gas work?

No, not without review. NASA hydrogen work and ISO 15156-1:2020 show why H2S and hydrogen service need separate evaluation. Please submit the project standard, medium chemistry, temperature, pressure, approval rule and stress level.

FAQ.06

What documents should be requested with Inconel 718 suppliers?

Request the chemical analysis, mill test certificate, standard revision, heat number, certificate of conformity, inspection requirements, mechanical properties and packing list. Please include any required customer and compliance clauses early in your RFQ, particularly if the order is for aerospace or defense projects.
