Titanium Grade Selector
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is the workhorse — but not always the right pick. Answer two questions to see the best-fit grade.
Recommended Grade
Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI). Extra-low interstitials (O ≤0.13%) give higher fracture toughness and fatigue life — the norm for implants and fracture-critical parts under ASTM F136 / ISO 5832-3. If cost outweighs damage tolerance and the part is not fracture-critical, standard Grade 5 (UNS R56400) is the lower-cost route.
Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V). Mid-range strength with good cold formability — the standard choice for pressure tubing and hydraulic lines. If the part must also carry high structural load, step up to Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V).
Grade 2 (CP). Commercially pure titanium: excellent corrosion resistance, easy forming and welding, and lower cost where high strength is not required. If the part must also carry high structural load, step up to Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V).
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). The alpha-beta workhorse: 950 MPa annealed tensile at 4.43 g/cm³, heat-treatable to 1170 MPa (STA). Best strength-to-weight for structural and machined parts under AMS 4928 / ASTM B348. For body-contact parts, specify the ELI (Grade 23) variant instead.
