Match Stainless Steel Pipe Or Tube To The Service Requirement

An unqualified size number does not identify the required diameter. ASME B36.19M uses NPS and schedule to define stainless steel pipe dimensions, while a tube RFQ states outside diameter and wall thickness; confirm the edition named by the purchase order before using either table. Treat “2-inch stainless” as incomplete because the wrong dimensional system can produce the wrong bore, connection or fit.

Decision rule

If the drawing give only “2-inch stainless,” return the RFQ for clarification. TiAlloy needs pipe or tube, the dimensional system, wall requirement and end interface before manufacture, processing or cutting can be confirmed. A stainless steel pipe schedule chart is usable only when its standard and edition match the order; published stainless steel pipe sizes don’t replace the drawing.

SMLS vs Welded Stainless Steel Pipe: Decide by Service Conditions

ASTM A312 covers pipe without a longitudinal weld seam, straight-seam welded pipe, and heavily cold-worked welded pipe; the controlling specification, service, size, and ordered tests determine route eligibility. The official ASME B36.19 pipe scope also distinguishes welded and pipe made without a longitudinal weld seam, but neither title makes one route automatically correct.

Name “SMLS only” or a specific weld route only when the design code, product standard, customer specification or risk assessment requires it. Record the controlling clause and required route evidence in the RFQ; an unneeded restriction can narrow supply without improving acceptance evidence.

For an order governed by ASTM A999 or A1016, the applicable product specification and any more stringent purchase-order requirements control the route, tests and supplementary requirements confirmed for that RFQ. Separate the ASME B36.19 pipe dimensional basis from ASTM manufacturing and test requirements; a factory-equipment list is not acceptance evidence.

A grade name does not close application risk because corrosion resistance depends on the service environment, temperature, chlorides, process chemistry, stress, fabrication condition and cleaning method. Published heat-exchanger cases document failures even where 316L or duplex material had been selected, so the engineering path starts with exposure and acceptance criteria rather than a copied grade.
