Match Hastelloy C276 to the Corrosion Problem Before You Quote

Hastelloy C276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy used when corrosion risk, chloride attack and acid exposure make ordinary stainless grades a wrong starting point. Purchase files tie the alloy to UNS N10276, often written as Alloy C-276, Hastelloy C-276 or C-276 alloy, and it’s known for corrosion resistance in chemical processing settings.

Haynes identifies C276 as a wrought nickel alloy with low carbon and low silicon, a detail that matters near weld heat-affected zone areas and grain boundary risk. Public material data also points buyers toward pitting and crevice corrosion, chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, wet chlorine, chlorine gas, hypochlorite, seawater, flue gas desulfurization, pulp and paper, oxidizing acids and non-oxidizing acids. Source language may describe excellent corrosion resistance, but TiAlloy keeps that phrase tied to the service medium, the as-welded condition and the project test rules. This list is useful, but it isn’t a free pass.

Be direct: C276 isn’t always the right alloy, and TiAlloy won’t claim that one grade solves every service problem. Temperature, concentration, aeration, contaminants, pressure design, fabrication, weld method and cleaning chemistry can change the answer. With about 16% chromium, about 16% molybdenum and about 4% tungsten in public C276 chemistry data, the alloy deserves a specific service check, not a guess.

TiAlloy can review the medium, product form and standard before quoting. For an industrial buyer, that reduces the risk of an expensive 3-week sourcing delay caused by a wrong form, wrong standard or missing test callout.

Hastelloy C276 Product Forms, Equivalent Grades and ASTM Standards

The C276 RFQ Standard Map is the page’s main decision asset. It turns a loose alloy request into a form-standard quote package, because the same UNS N10276 chemistry can be purchased as plate, tube, welded pipe or bar with different ASTM callouts.

Pipe, tube, welded pipe and welded tube aren’t the same RFQ line item. This is the common assumption that creates a trade-off between price speed and document accuracy. Before pricing, TiAlloy checks the standard, dimensions, tolerance and finish against the product form.

C276 vs 316L, 904L, Alloy 625 and C22: A Procurement Selection Matrix

The Use-When / Verify-First Matrix keeps the page honest. C276 is often reviewed when 316L, 904L or a lower-alloy option faces pitting, crevice corrosion, chloride stress corrosion cracking, mixed acids or wet chlorine service. C276 is still not the automatic premium answer.

Alloy Shift Context

C276 isn’t always the best upgrade when oxidizing chloride service points toward C22 or newer variants. Nickel Institute material context shows the nickel-chromium-molybdenum family change chromium, molybdenum, copper and tungsten to shift performance in different oxidizing acids and non-oxidizing acids. Cost, lead time, fabrication route and risk tolerance form the trade-off.

Project Code Limits

In high-temperature strength cases, Alloy 625 may need its own review; ASTM B443 separates UNS N06625 Grade 1 service up to 1100 F (593 C) from Grade 2 service above that range when creep and rupture resistance is required. In H2S oil and gas service, ISO 15156-3 selection and qualification rules can govern corrosion-resistant alloys, so C276 vs 625 is a project-code question, not a keyword-table answer.

When C276 Moves Up the List

High chloride, acid cleaning, pitting risk or repeated stainless failure

What to Verify First

Temperature, concentration, contaminants, weld area and whether 316L failed by pit, crack or crevice attack

TiAlloy RFQ Callout

Request a grade review with media, temperature and part size

When C276 Moves Up the List

Stronger nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy resistance is needed beyond high-alloy stainless

What to Verify First

Acid mix, chloride level, pressure design, corrosion allowance and budget ceiling

TiAlloy RFQ Callout

Send past failure photos, 904L data and target life

When C276 Moves Up the List

Chemical process corrosion resistance matters more than a heat-strength reason

What to Verify First

Stress corrosion cracking, weld work, formic and acetic acids, ferric and cupric chlorides

TiAlloy RFQ Callout

Ask for both grade options only when the service case is unclear

When C276 Moves Up the List

Reducing environments or mixed service still fit C276

What to Verify First

Oxidizing media, chloride plus oxidizer mix, availability and project price risk

TiAlloy RFQ Callout

Confirm against actual media instead of using a brand-name shortcut

The catch is simple. Low-price quotes aren’t always the best quotes when the grade is right but the form standard, test scope or weld requirement is wrong. Without engineering input from the buyer, TiAlloy won’t claim a substitute alloy is acceptable; it can prepare a quote path that shows where the risk sits.

Application Matrix by Equipment Type

A process engineer may start with corrosion resistance. A purchasing team must still decide whether the project needs plate, pipe, tube, rod or bar. This matrix connects common C276 applications to the RFQ detail that reduces back-and-forth.

At TiAlloy, the differentiator isn’t a longer product list. Instead, the differentiator is the ability to connect production, precision cutting, heat treat, testing and export packing to the same RFQ. Such alignment matters when an EU buyer, US buyer or EPC team has 2 mm tolerance notes, about 16% molybdenum chemistry checks and a 20 year supplier audit history requirement.

Manufacturing, Inspection and Export Document Support

The PMI + MTC Document Gate addresses a buyer problem that doesn’t show up in a simple price search: the alloy can be correct on the quote and still create risk if heat number, chemical composition, PMI rule or export file is incomplete.

PMI vs. MTC Verification

MTC alone does not replace receiving-grade verification when a buyer requires PMI. ASTM E1476 frames metals identification, grade verification and sorting as a quality concern from melting to final application, and it lists spectrometric methods such as XRF and optical emission spectrometry among grade-verification tools. In this page, PMI means a buyer-requested verification step; it does not replace the MTC, the product standard or project acceptance testing.

Audit & Traceability Scope

For an EPC quality team or customer audit, the order file may ask for MTC, chemical test values, mechanical test values, heat/lot traceability, PMI when required, UT or other NDE when applicable, packing photos and shipment records. TiAlloy should receive those requirements before quote so the test scope doesn’t become a late-stage risk.

Pressure-Code Approval Clarity

In plain terms, material supply documents aren’t the same as pressure-code design approval. From a generic web page, TiAlloy won’t claim ASME or vessel-code approval. Where the project asks for ASME SB material wording, third-party inspection, weld procedure records or pressure-equipment documents, send that callout before quoting so the scope isn’t over-constrained after purchase.

Hastelloy C276 Price and Lead Time: What Changes the Quote

Hastelloy C276 price is too volatile for a fixed number on a product solution page. Nickel price, mill route, stock position, size, tolerance, testing and export terms can move the quote. Quote teams need a Quote Variable Scorecard.

Market Signals

BLS import-price data showed nickel and articles at 110.0 in June 2026, up 12.7% year over year and 6.2% month over month. USGS commodity pages tie nickel to stainless and nonferrous alloys, while molybdenum is used with chromium, nickel and tungsten in corrosion-resistant alloying. These public signals support quote volatility, but they don’t set TiAlloy’s actual mill price.

Economic Context & Strategy

Corrosion control has a large economic context, but a broad global corrosion-cost statistic shouldn’t be sold as a direct savings promise for one C276 plate or pipe order. Use a narrower call: identify the variables that can cause a cost surprise, a long-lead item or a receiving-inspection fail.

C276 is expensive and long-lead; use it only when process chemistry justifies the cost. TiAlloy’s sales team can price a specific spec, but it shouldn’t replace engineering judgment. Put the trade-off in the quote file, not in a vague line item.

FAQ for Hastelloy C276 Material, Standards and Orders

01

Is Hastelloy C276 the same as Alloy C-276?

For RFQ language, buyers often use Hastelloy C276, Alloy C-276, alloy c276 and C-276 alloy to discuss UNS N10276 / 2.4819 material. To keep procurement, engineering and quality aligned, TiAlloy keeps those names visible so the same about 16% molybdenum alloy does not split into separate quote threads. Pair the commercial name with the UNS number and ASTM form standard.

02

Is Hastelloy C276 stainless steel?

No. C276 is a nickel alloy, not stainless steel. The distinction matters when the failure mode is pit growth, crack risk, crevice corrosion, wet chlorine attack or acid service.

03

What is UNS N10276?

UNS N10276 is the material identifier used in standards and purchase files for C276. UNS N10276 helps a buyer avoid the wrong-alloy mistake when the drawing, MTC, PMI checklist and customs file all need the same grade line. On request, TiAlloy can include UNS N10276 with 2.4819 and Alloy C-276 on the RFQ review.

04

Which ASTM standard applies to Hastelloy C276 plate?

ASTM B575 is the most common standard route for sheet, plate and strip. Your RFQ for a plate should still identify width and length in mm, thickness in mm, and the requirement for surface, cutting, flatness and inspection. Before quotation, TiAlloy can verify whether the drawing is a 3 mm sheet inquiry or a 30 mm reactor plate order, because those are handled differently in the factory.

05

Which ASTM standard applies to pipe or tube made without a weld seam?

ASTM B622 is commonly used for C276 pipe and tube without a weld seam. Welded pipe is associated with ASTM B619/B619M, and welded tubing is generally tied to ASTM B626. Thus, one should not just say “C276 pipe” when wall, OD and weld status are a risk.

06

Can TiAlloy supply C276 plate, pipe and bar for the same project?

Yes, subject to TiAlloy’s described product scope. The supplied company profile covers nickel alloy plate, sheet, pipe, tube, rod and bar, with rolling, heat treatment, tube work, bar processing, cutting, polishing, CNC and export packing. Split the inquiry by product form so the specification, standard, tolerance and document requirement can be checked for each line item.

07

Why does Hastelloy C276 price vary so much?

Product price changes with form, size, tolerance, stock, test scope, MTC/PMI requirements, finish, packing and export term. Nickel alloy price is only one part of the final quote. The buyer risk is a low quotation that omits test items, standards or receiving-inspection requirements. Request a quotation with the specification file attached.

Engineering Review Notice

FAQ guidance does not replace engineering review, and TiAlloy does not present it that way. For hazardous or pressure-related service, send the service data, drawing and document requirements through the RFQ channel.
